GENERAL MANAGER'S UPDATE - June 13, 2018
I am once again pleased to report our 2017-18 season was a success. Nothwithstanding our late start, we were still able to finish the year in a positive financial situation, we completed a respectful number of facility improvements, and we were able to add resources to our capital asset reserve.
The pad replacement project had an obvious and significant impact on our season. From a short-term financial perspective, unfortunately it was a negative one. However, the we now boast one of the best, most efficient and state-of-the-art curling ice facilities in the country, and will benefit from this improved infrastructure for decades. Almost everything outside the glass in new and improved!
While it cost us almost two months of play at our own facility, we enjoyed the arena experience at the Encana Events Centre for a few weeks, and hosted a very successful cash spiel in that venue. Our partnership with the City of Dawson Creek continues to flourish; their investment and commitment to community recreation continues to be notable, and very much appreciated.
Our various other partners continue to demonstrate their community-mindedness, and desire to see us thrive. Please read my report, and pay attention to the merchant acknowledgements within our facility itself; help us to appreciate their many contributions when you shop locally.
Our club managed to maintain our overall membership, and we had some increases, most notably in the elementary and mixed doubles programs. In fact, we got younger... 41% of our members are now under 30 years of age!

I am thrilled that the Board has extended my contract as GM and Head Ice Tech for another season. I look forward to a more normal start (by Thanksgiving), and another great year ahead. In addition to our normal and new club curling options, we are excited to host our second provincial championship in the last three years - the Alberta Mixed Doubles Provincial Championship in February 2019. Mixed Doubles is one of curling fastest growing disciplines, and it will be a pleasure to showcase this premier event in our facility.
If you or your friends need a venue this summer, stop in or call me at the rink. Otherwise, see you in the fall!
